rain-activated art (2017)

Commissioned by The Charleston Area Alliance, these artworks were made using hand-cut stencils and a biodegradable chemical spray that repels water. The spray is used on the pavement where it dries clear. The artwork is invisible until the pavement around it is dampened and darkened with water. The artworks last an average of 2 to 4 months, reappearing each time it rains. The images here represent a series of installments throughout downtown Charleston. The video beneath the images shows a time-lapse of the mandala installation. The mandala depicts the water cycle, starting with the outer circle as the clouds. Beneath the clouds, raindrops fall onto mountains and the water flows down the rivers to the oceans, where it is then evaporated by the sun.
